Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
When something happens to us that is disturbing or traumatic, we often struggle to put it out of our minds. Sometimes, the more you try to forget, the more this event begins to impact you. Trauma can take many forms, whether it’s experiencing physical or sexual trauma, the loss of a loved one, or having been involved in combat. It can often be extremely difficult to process these experiences.
In some cases, you can feel stuck and as though you are frozen by your past traumatic experiences. If you feel as though traditional therapies haven’t worked well for you in the past, EMDR may be a helpful option. Talking about these experiences can help but you may feel you need to take it one step further. If you are done just talking about your experiences and want to address them head on, EMDR could help you reduce the intensity of your symptoms. While your symptoms may not be erased entirely, you can begin to feel better.
What is EMDR?
EMDR is a type of therapy which relies on your own bilateral, rapid, rhythmic eye movements to help you reduce the power of traumatic memories. It is unique in that it does not rely solely on talk therapy or medications. Your EMDR trained provider will help you work through a variety of phases that focus on the past, present, and future to assist you in working through trauma and emotional distress. Your provider may use a variety of techniques to help you focus on moving your eyes throughout your EMDR sessions including their hands or a light bar. Your provider will guide you through the EMDR process and develop a plan to reduce the negative impact of your past experiences.
